I'll never forget the look on my dad's face when he went flying into the air and landed hard on his back in our linoleum kitchen.
He glared straight at me as he yelled, "What is all over this floor??!!"
Feeling the grease in his hands and lifting his fingers to his nose, he growled, "IS THIS BUTTER?! WHO THE HELL PUT BUTTER ALL OVER THIS FLOOR?!"
I knew the situation was bad.
Dad always swore when he was mad. I was terribly disappointed he ruined my fun but I was way too scared to say anything. There was no use hiding though, he knew it was me. Timidly, I answered, "Um... well... I was making a skating rink."
"A whaaat?!!" he looked at me with a ridiculous expression.
"A skating rink," I said a little louder.
I thought in my mind, "And if you did it right, you wouldn't have biffed it like that." (Of course I never could have said it out loud.)
Honestly though, it was the coolest, most fun, idea my little 7yr.-old brain had ever come up with. I must have spread at least three full sticks of butter, maybe more, to get my skating rink nice and slippery. I had a blast while it lasted.

Fast forward to when I would have children of my own....
I used my old childhood idea to give them something fun to do in the cold winter months. Only with my kids, I didn't use butter.... I got smart and used soap. We'd make the floor as slippery as we could, just thick with lather, and then drench the floor. It was a total win/win because they had the time of their life with "indoor skating" and when they were done, I had a sparkling clean floor.
